Project Statement
The Nautilus table is born from a rigorous formal discipline: every element — the top, the legs, the feet — is generated from elliptical sections. As in the shell that gives it its name, a single law of growth governs the whole organism. The result is an object that is at once sculptural and functional, equally at home in a living room or a large boardroom.
The Nautilus has crossed two eras. First as a piece made in a cabinetmaker's workshop: a glossy black lacquered top, legs in alternating bands of wood and lacquer, solid-wood shaped feet. Then as a three-dimensional model, faithfully rebuilt to explore new finishes and new dimensions.
The comparison reveals how mature the original design already was: the geometry has not changed — only the way of telling it has.
The top is an ellipse in polyester-lacquered wood, with a 45° bevelled edge that visually thins its thickness. The legs are quarter-ellipses in vertical section and half-ellipses in horizontal section, built from two-tone horizontal bands that mark their taper.
Even the feet obey the same law: quarter-ellipses in vertical section, half-ellipses in horizontal section, carved from solid wood. No straight lines, no sharp edges — only curves answering one another.
Before the finished piece came the maquette: a scale model that allows the balance of volumes, the tilt of the legs and the presence of the solid-wood feet anchoring the composition to the ground, to be verified in the flesh.
Seen from below, the maquette reveals the project's most characteristic gesture: the top appears suspended, held up by two inverted cones that taper almost to the point of disappearing.

The Nautilus can be made in various wood species and lacquer colours: from the classic black-versus-natural-wood contrast to warmer, more material combinations. The legs' two-tone bands become a palette, not a constraint.
Thanks to the bearing capacity of the legs and the ability to bring them closer together or further apart, the table is available in considerable dimensions: from a dining table to a large boardroom surface, without altering the design.
